Knowing the history of the CIA, and just how my brain works... This article (excerpted below) makes me wonder if certain clandestine operatives linked to the CIA may have had a hand in this...

There've been calls many times to invade Syria, and now, we can have a pretext (which we've(the "we" of the United States) already hinted at during our statements on Syria's controlling relationship to Lebanon) to get our grubby mitts nearer to that goal, if not directly to that point yet...

The other issue is the Christian population and their relationship to Sunni and Shia in that country. IIRC, there's Sunni control, and if you look at the flags of the two nations, they are very similarly designed. Now, I also think that there is some sort of link historically between Syria and Iraq, but I'm not sure. It's been awhile since I've looked at the history of the Middle-East since the end of World Wars I & II.

There is a history of sectarian violence in Lebanon, and Israel is widely considered to have had involvement in the infamous Sabra and Shatilla massacres in 1982....

I don't know. I've been thinking alot about Imperialism and Colonialism and Tribalism and how much it's fucked up the world in it's wake. How fucking racist assholes like Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt were. How we supported the fucking WHITE dictatorship of South Africa and the horrific brutality visited upon the black populace of that country. And the current map of the Middle East is, as with so many other colonized areas, arbitrarily drawn according to the impulse and political powers of the ruling (white, european, christian, capitalist, crusader) nations.

U.S. Recalls Its Envoy in Syria, Linking Nation to Beirut Blast

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 - The Bush administration recalled its ambassador to Syria on Tuesday to protest what it sees as Syria's link to the murder of the former prime minister of Lebanon, as violent anti-Syrian protests erupted in Beirut and several other Lebanese cities.

At the United Nations, the administration also demanded that Syria withdraw its troops from Lebanon, and the Security Council called for an urgent investigation into the killing of the former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, who died Monday with 13 others when a huge car bomb blew up his motorcade in downtown Beirut.

Investigators in Lebanon said they had come to no conclusion yet as to who carried out the attack. But Lebanese opposition leaders joined with the Bush administration in linking Syria to the bombing.

One interesting thing to note is the arabic text on the Iraqi flag: Allahu akbar, "God is Great"... This was added AFTER the Gulf War. Prior to that, it was like the Syrian flag except with 3 instead of 2 stars...
