Well jesus h christ...
Today has just been a bugger-all day, ain't it?
First, WoW crashed on me. I tried the repair tool, and it failed a couple times, so I finally ended up checkdisking with XP. Well it fixed it. And I got the reinstall working. Then I thought I had to reinstall all my wow mods. I didn't. But, I DO have to reset up each characters settings. Ugh. I haven't started THAT fun project (why oh why?) BTW, it took me 2 fucking hours to get WoW working again (including scan disk, revert to 2.0 and then patch WoW... what a freaking PITA...
vesicular had a problem last night with wow crashing, but I don't think it was for the same problem. His was a texture cache issue I think. I think I had some bad sectors on my disc.
Then, due to that FF bug I posted last entry about (the resizing window) I decided to reinstall FF and all my mods.
Which made me think about my old plans to share my FF "essential" extensions with you. So... Here they are!
delicious: Yep, your standard del.icio.us. If you've got an account and FF you prolly already have it. I use this "basic" one (the old version) that doesn't try to fully integrate with your bookmarks. Sorry, there's some bookmarks that I prefer to just be mine, thanks much. If I wanna share, I'll hit that nice shiny "tag" button, m'kay?
adblock plus: You have FF and not this? Do you really enjoy having ads thrown in your face? OK, then, don't use this. But otherwise, use it. And make sure you have filterset.g to go with it (and make sure you update the filterset). Works pretty nicely, I must say.
Copy URL+: A very handy tool. You blog links? Wanna select a bit of text for a reference? Don't feel like copying, then pasting the text then going back to the page and getting the URL? Just select the menu item "copy url+" and then you can tell it to select your text and URL and it pastes it all in one fell swoop (you can also choose to select title/url and title/selection/url) Very handy for quick links, especially since LJ automatically makes "http" into links.
Please NOTE: CopyURL+ is outdated. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, rather it's only set to support FF 1.6. It DOES work with 2.0+, but you have to hack a little. That said, since I'm in a charitable mood, I've done the hack for you. Here it is. Basically this tells it that you can use this addon up to version 3.0... I can't guarantee that's the case, but it's set to not expire until 3.0...
Linkification: Ever been to a site that has URLs that aren't actually hotlinks? Hate how you can't just click on it? Well, linkification automatically turns http and mailto text into clickable links so you don't have to deal with such a mess again.
Super DragAndGo is another great one (and I recommend it 100%). Before I found linkification this was the way I went with dealing with non hypertext links. I'd select the text then "throw" my cursor a bit and let go of the button. Bam! New tab opens with that URL. But that's not all! I really hate having to navigate menus. Let's say you want to search for some text? Well, sure you can highlight the text and right click then find the "search" menu entry. Or you can drag the text up into the search bar. But both of those require more precision than I care to deal with. If the text I drag/throw isn't a URL, a new window opens with the google search for it. Very handy. Make sure you use the version I'm linking here, as the version that is on the main firefox extension site is broken. The version on the official extensions page doesn't have search working with Firefox version 2.0+. This one I'm linking fixes that. Oh, you can also set it to download images with the flick of a wrist (I don't use that as it's too easy to drag an image and it automatically downloads when i didn't mean it).
DownThemAll: Got a lot of media on a page you want to get quickly? DtA can do that for ya. Videos? Pics? Other sorts of links? Nice and easy. No more selecting each link and downloading individually.
Flashblock: Another classic. Flash ads are pretty damn annoying and Flashblock can take care of that. Only see flash that you want to see. Otherwise a simple button covers it up... Click the button and off you go to flash heaven.
FoxMarks: Well, what happens if you lose your bookmarks? If you uninstall firefox? Or go to a different computer? Remember how I said I don't like some bookmarks public? Well foxmarks is the answer. A bookmark syncing utility that allows you to backup/restore your bookmarks and access them on the go, without having to share them all.
FoxyTunes: Listen to music? Hate having to open a separate music player if you just wanna advance a few tracks? Well, foxytunes can plug into many different players (itunes, winamp, windows media player, songbird, and many many more) and gives you simple control functionality right within your browser (inside the "status" bar at the bottom of the browser)
Locationbar2 : Now THIS is a very nice addon. Say you're on a site, and you wanna get to a higher level directory? Well, locationbar basically chunks up each subdirectory into it's own clickable links so www.example.net/1/2/3 makes example.net, 1, 2, and 3 each a clickable link so you can navigate different levels of a site quick and easy. Also a nice way to hit the "home" page of a site without having to find the official link on a page.
Greasemonkey: What can I say? This is one of the biggies. It allows you to modify pages with scripts. One of the main reasons I use it is to be able to do multiple selections of checkboxes by shift-clicking on a range of them. Very handy. Say you have multiple mail messages in a webmail application. Want to delete a whole range? Shift click the first one and the last one, and all the ones in between are selected. This should just be given behavior. Note: That use is a script. Anything you do with this requires a script. But you're not a hacker/coder? No problem! Many scripts are available at userscripts.org. Note that you can find functionality for livejournal and metafilter amongst many other sites that you may frequent.
Web Developer: Well in the previous post I mentioned this. If you develop web pages you probably already use it. If not? Why not? Great utility... View the DOM of a page, resize a page (800x600, 1024x768), edit CSS, display all kinds of handy info.
So... Do you have any addons that you find handy that aren't on this list?

Date: 2007-07-02 01:12 am (UTC)That said, WoW is the shit. There's other MMORPGs I'd like to try, but of course, the ones that require money well... why try it if it costs me money? And the free ones. They're ok, but not having friends on there, and being free they don't have the same polish, I think.
Is there a way to run XP either through virtualization (dunno how efficient that'd be) or dual-boot?
