Thought about ownership of the airwaves today. The idea that individuals, corporations or government entities can claim a specific Electromagnetic frequency to propagate information.
Radio waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, this includes TV signals and shortwave as well. Next are microwaves/radar, then light(infrared, white light, ultraviolet), X-rays and finally Gamma-rays.
Now here's what's fucked up. We assume that we can "sell" a specific frequency to someone. The idea being that this allows them to transmit the information of their choosing(subject to certain restrictions, of course...) But a radio/tv frequency is really not much different from a color. Red, for instance is approximately 700 nanometers in length... As far as I know, you can't encode information in "red"/700 nanometer wavelengths, but I'm just making an assumption... So, theoretically, let's assume that you just increase the frequencies you sell off to certain entities until it hit's that wavelength. What happens? Does Clear Channel now own the rights to a specific color of red? Can they charge manufacturers of red balloons an intellectual property fee for infringing on their ownership of that color of red? Where, exactly do we or should we draw the line on this?
I know, I'm being pretty stupid in the long run, but just another wacky thought spewing forth into the aether.
