Aides moved quickly to correct a mistake Bush made in the news conference that caused the Japanese yen to dip against the dollar.

Seeking to show support for Koizumi's economic policies, Bush said at a news conference that he and the prime minister had discussed "nonperforming loans, the devaluation issue and regulatory reform."

Shortly after the news conference, White House aides said Bush misspoke and the two leaders had actually talked about deflation, not devaluation, the much more prickly issue of Japan allegedly letting its yen drop in value against the dollar to make its exports more competitive overseas.

Considering how much I've been reading about devaluing the en in Japanese papers, I bet they talked about it, but I bet he just wasn't supposed to mention it. Either that or they didn't think it would have an impact if he mentioned it and when it did they had to back pedal.Wht they should've been talking about was streamlining the Japanese government and dealing with old boys clubs, oh but wait this is Dubya we're talking about...
