Anybody find these two facts disturbing about the state of the union address:
1) He referred to Iraq, Iran and N. Korea as an "axis" of terror.
2) He claimed the Iraq was evil cuz they used weapons of mass destruction(ie: chemical/biological) weapons on civilians and killed hundreds if not thousands. And the only country to use nuclear weapons(not one, but two) on innocent civilian populations was???????????????????????????? And how many thousands died and suffered terrible diseases?
3) The latest figures for how many innocents died in our "war on(or should that be "of") terror" is about 3500. And if we continue our so-called war, how many more innocents will die? Is that ok, then, cuz they're not American?
anyways, i'll shut up. bye.

Date: 2002-01-30 03:53 pm (UTC)dunno if you're aware of this, but our own gov't, headed by Bush senior in the gulf war- was responsible for literally showering the iraqi countryside with depleated uranium shells...
although much facts are difficult thanks to on-going sanctions (as well as US-originated propaganda), there is much evidence pointing to the fact that (i dont rememebr the exact figure, but) many iraqi newborn babies die all the time, suffering from horrific birth-defects, the kind which would be attributable to radiation... The culprits are the A-10 Warthog fighter-bombers. They are called 'tank killers' and have these shells made with depleated uranium(yep leftover nuclear waste)...when they explode in the tanks(or houses, etc.) they release a very fine dust, one which can easily be inhaled through the victim's respratory tract, and/or can seep into the water-supply and can/does effect livestock/people in that way.

also, NATO (ie. the 7(or was it 9?) headed whore spoken of in the book of revelations) did the same thing to the beautiful land i was born in, Bosnia of former Yugoslavia...where many kids in the rural parts(areas bombed by us airforce A-10 warthogs), there are many who have various defects, like missing limbs, body parts, etc. quite lovely, indeed. And now Serbia too has these problems, thanks to (guess who...) Uncle Sam. Nuclear waste disposal, at it's worst. Just shower it over other 'rogue nations' and that's that much lest uranium for us to have to bury in Nevada!
I used to beat myself up over and over (in my mind), wondering what can be done, knowing that something must be done...
but over the past couple of months, i have realized that there currently isn't much that i can do; save of course openly talking of this, and sharing the truths
of all the attrocities commited by our own country, this, 'land of the free'
i've also found myself hardly looking at news reports anymore, mainly since after reading Noam Chomsky's works, that the corporate media is completely biased towards the established system, and against anything that might have the potential to actually cause real change(or even collapse!) from within...
and you know what; i've been happier of late. It's not that i no longer care, rather, it's that i realize that if i myself can connect with people in a loving, un-negative sorta way, then i can play my own small part in helping others i come in contact with, to perhaps realize that things aren't as CNN may make them appear to seem...
because of course, memes are utterly contagous. Paradigms are highly shatterable... :)
one person catches the whole love contagion-vibe, then another, then another, then before we all know it, it will all trickle upwards into the very minds and hearts of those politicians who are in a position of power where they themselves can put a stop to these tragedies, for the rest of human history...

Date: 2002-01-30 04:48 pm (UTC)So, I'm not sure exactly where I stand politically. i mean, I am an anarchist, I know that. But I'm also a cynic in some regards(mostly with power as it exists), and seeing that I don't think we can ever truly abolish power of our own accord, I'm thinking of new ways to deal with it, and that's to be Yin. Not like MLK or Ghandi and pacifist, but to totally acquiesce, because, in some ways, I think that the Yang attitude of power and domination always contains within itself the seeds of destruction. Sadly, I think that Mother Earth will perish(or at least the vast majority of life) if this occurs. But in long term survival of Gaia, I think it may be necessary. Again, I'm not calling for the radical destruction of all human life(a la 12 Monkeys), but rather letting the course of "progress" head to it's own natural destiny.
One thing you mention about information and change... My bosses wife is all about giving to charity and everytime I talk about shit(the fundamentals, not like "things suck" but that there's a core reason why it sucks) she's like "I always ask people what they're doing... They should give to charity if they care." And I told her that 1) My "doing" is educating, informing... Without being informed, people can never make the change. 2) Charity, while it's nice, isn't the solution. It's a patch on an ill system, it's not preventative. It's just like our medical system. Therefore, I really don't support "charity". I find conservatives always talk about "don't give a man a fish, teach him to fish" but when it comes to it, they sure as hell don't give a man a fish(that's very true), but neither do they even really attempt to teach a man to fish.(sorry to be so misogynistic).
Anyways, I think we're on the same wave-length when it comes to this. Hope the job works out for you. I think it's cool you got a new job, and hopefully you can get some great herbage!
Peace

Date: 2002-01-30 05:07 pm (UTC)sarah and i have been doing much discussion of how there has been truly too much yang energy on this planet. The age of Aquarius(sp) the new agers speak of, is supposed to signify a planetary(perhaps even galactic) shift in consciousness, from the masculine yang energy, to the feminine yin energy. so i couldn't agree with you more.
On the enron fiasco...:
Believe it or not, i worked as a courier in Houston, tx last year until we moved to colorado(for a brief stint-too much to explain at the moment) in July.
Our office was based in downtown H-town, like 6 blocks away from the enron towers. I witnessed all the construction of that second, identical copy of that first skyscraper...
I myself was unaware of the politics behind them, but i did know full well that Bush senior has many connections to the energy industry(so much so that he even has an office in west-houston which i've been to), and that of course, 'like father, like son...'
I can understand your cynisism and skeptisism on things; i do feel that some healthy skeptisism, is well, just that!
but one thing i will suggest is: don't give up hope on mother gaia's own ability to heal herself. While there will likely have to be some 'earth changes' in order to clense, i feel that she will heal much of the scarring that we have collectively inflicted upon her.
I have also been trying to 'grok' the concept that while at this very physical dimesional viewpoint, it is very difficult to see any real consciousness within earth; beyond the symbiotic relationships of her plants/an
