I'm curious, and am of course, looking to you,
vesicular, but anyone who may know anything about this could surely contribute.
I've got the mac working on my LAN and am able to see my mp3 directory. currently, i have a web-server set up so i can access and stream while i'm at work. however, I'd rather be able to just browse the network share and access the mp3 directly. i can do this with the finder, and it will open itunes, however, itunes doesn't stream the data. it downloads a local copy(AFAICT)... I'd like to be able to access as a share and stream when I click on the mp3. Is this possible, or would I need to set up a special server system. If so, would it just be easier to utilize the web server I've already got set up?
I'd like to just do it the browseable way. But have not clue if it's possible.
Brent, you should get on AIM sometime. maybe send me an e-mail when you may be going on.
Also, is there some sort of notifier for mail I can download without having to keep mail.app open?

Date: 2004-12-30 11:51 am (UTC)As for mail, I just keep mine open. Isn't that the way it's supposed to work? I rarely close my apps. You don't have any reason to under OS X.

Date: 2004-12-30 01:12 pm (UTC)Under windows, I tend to close those programs I'm not working with. If I'm not writing mail, I conserve memory by not leaving it open. Not that it should matter, I suppose. But it clutters the "toolbar" at the bottom of the screen, but since macs are different, I have to get used to the paradigm. It makes sense with the mac, and it's efficient use of space on the dock.
I really like the interface so far. I just need to get a kvm switch. I use te keyboard and mouse you gave me, because it's easier to keep plugged in, but eventually, I'd rather use my regular setup.
Long term is to set up a wireless network throughout the house and be able to stream downstairs(is this feasible?) My "rec room" as it were, is down-stairs

Date: 2004-12-30 02:04 pm (UTC)As for memory, you don't really need to worry about it in OS X. It's all allocated on the fly for whatever app needs it, so having a bunch of apps open doesn't really slow down or limit memory usage all that much at all. The only exception is memory hogs like Photoshop or any video production stuff, that sort of thing.
I thought you had a wirelss network? If not, then yeah, you should get one. Makes life a lot easier (though I have a laptop so I guess that makes sense, but also with things like the Arcade or our Tivo).
