"Intellectual property theft is a national security crime." So says Jonathan Lamy, spokesthing for the RIAA... Yeah, yeah, I'm dehumanizing him, I know, it's horrible. But really? All by my lil' ol' self, by downloading a track off a P2P, I have suddenly committed high crimes against the country??? I have caused such a threat to the stability of the nation, because I wanted a live recording of Autechre...
If you don't understand it, here's the deal:
It's not the fucking government who is going to censor you(oh, I mean they will pass laws that will, but it's not outright banning of speech)... They will merely be "protecting property", and the corporations who are pushing for these horrible bills are the real face behind the mask... And if you think that it doesn't matter. That you can get your HBO DVD's, and you're just hunky dorey with that, well, pity the world to come for you and your kin... You get what you deserve. And if you don't want to fight it, then you can pay for every little thing that they want you to pay for. Over, and over, and over again. If they had their way, you would have to pay for every tiny bit of information out there, and... AND!!! Not only once, but each time you view it. That would be their masturbatory dream-world.
Fucking Parasites, sucking the lifeless soul out of an already dead and bloated corpse called the "American Public" Starving artists for sale! Pimp you out like a mo'fo', and VU, Sony, EMI, Capitol, etc, etc, etc, are calling the shots. They don't want you to create your world. They don't want you to hack reality. They want to create your world for you, and make the plastic life even more plastic.
I feel really sad that the masses have no fucking clue about this shit, about freedom of information, and the way the government is going to be clamping down.
Current legislation, the Intellectual Property Protection Act is a bill that wraps up 8 other bills into one comprehensive IP bill. Supposedly, in theory, the text of the legislation could be construed as making illegal any attempt to fast-forward a commercial. I read the text and didn't get that out of it. In fact, the text of the bill is completely insane, because it really reads as a bunch of legalistic mumbo-jumbo... Lots and lots of talk about "states" but I'm not sure why...
These are the first 2 bill-texts that I've seen calle IPPA:
1st is senate, 2nd is house...
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:5:./temp/~c10825ebgU::
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:6:./temp/~c10825ebgU::
but now, I also found this the "Intellectual Property Protection and Courts Amendments Act of 2004", which may be the specific text they're discussing, as it talks about counterfeiting labels, and I seem to recall this as an issue in an article on this bill.
1st is house, 2nd is senate:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:7:./temp/~c10825ebgU::
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:8:./temp/~c10825ebgU::
I shall have to read the 2nd set, since that may be what they're referring to. Again, though, I'm sure this is a broad interpretation, and would hope the courts would strike it down, or at least narrow the scope in their interpretation... But now that Bush is in charge again, we can look forward to an even more conservative Judiciary, locking in step to the corporate controlled Congress and Executive, so my hopes of a tight interpretation of said law is pretty low.
Why have the government censor, when Wal-Mart, the RIAA, the MPAA, the Hardware Manufacturers(with their Broadcast flags), etc... are all conspiring together to control information distribution. We are free now, and we have the right to speak, and create, and to share, but if we aren't vigilant, if we don't fight and struggle against this, we're in a load of deep-shit. It's only gonna get worse. Clear Channel, Viacom, etc... ain't nothin' to what they could be after they get what they want passed.
That's not to say the gov't isn't censoring and cracking down because a boobie was shown on TV... Or that broadcasters fears are that the gov't will fine them heavily for being "indecent"
You know what's indecent to me? Pat fucking Robertson... George W Bush... Benny Hinn... PAX TV... Money-changers in the temple of all stripes(incl. aforementioned Mr.'s Robertson, Hinn and faith healers...) John Ashcroft, Jenna and Barbara Bush, Iran-Contra, Iraq Sanctions, Homeless people starving while fat-ass rich fuckers feed at the trough of government and the people's labor. All this shit is indecent, but they're AOK in Amerika's eyes.
rant off....
