A collection of Buddhist proverbs...

v62 The fool thinks anxiously, "These children and this wealth is mine" But he is not even master of himself, much less of children and possessions.

(this is a great indictment of the capitalist patriarchal system. How can you own something, if you do not even own yourself? You fall prey to the raging monkey-mind...)

v66 Fools are their own greatest enemies for the trouble they make bears bitter fruit.

v69 The fool thinks that the mischief he makes is as sweet as honey till it bears its fruit, and then he suffers.

(this one in particular is one I need to work on, for today is a prime example. My "wall of conscience" mischief, the thought excites me, it's sweet as honey, but I shall reap the fruit of the deed. And will anything have been gained? Probably not.)

v46 When you know that the body is mearly the foam on the crest of a wave, unreal as a mirage, you will break the flowery arrows of craving. Unseen, you will escape the King of Death and travel onwards.

v47 The flowers of pleasure tempt the thoughtless man. But when he gathers them, death overtakes him as a flood sweeps away a sleeping village.

(this is perfect in our modern world of capitalist consumption. always get more shit, and then, when you least expected it... BAM!!! You're fucking dead. "He who dies with the most toys... is still fucking dead, asshole.")

v49 When the bee collects honey it does not spoil the beauty or scent of the flower. So let the sage settle in himself and wander as he wills.

(simplicity movements. This is related to my current path. I feel a calling, as it were, to remove a lot of shit from my life. I will post some stuff on the madison freecycle so people can have some free stuff. maybe i'll post some stuff on here that you may be interested in. magazines, old cd's, old computer parts, etc...)

v50 Do not remark on the faults of others, but see what you yourself have done or left undone. Then overlook the faults of others.

(does this not remind you of "Before you pluck the mote out of thine brothers eyes, be sure to cast away the plank that obstructs your own vision."... I think the "done or undone" idea is actually somewhere in the bible as well, i'll have to research it.)

v104 The conquest of oneself is better than the conquest of all others.

(this is what I aim for now. it's also tied into the "i am a reflection of the greater whole, and if i conquest my self, my world is also conquested..." in other words, the "greater jihad", as it were, of self-control and mastery of pride, anger, resentment, vengeance, can lead to the change in the world at large)

v128 Not in the sky, nor in the sea, nor in a cave in the mountains can a man find a place where death cannot overcome him.

--------------------- a full set of verses ----------------------------
147 Look at your body - frail and sickly, racked with pains - how can it last?

148 Your body wastes away, is full of disease and feebleness, and then it dies. Death is the end of life.

149 Behold these belaching bones, scattered like empty husks in the autumn.

151 Just as the brilliant carriages of kings wear out, so does the body become old. But the teachings of the wise never grow old, they pass on for ever to the good.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

197 Live happily, without hating even those who hate you. Be free from hatred among those who hate.

(like all the christian teachings on turning the other cheek, to love they neighbor, etc...)

199 Live happily, free from greed among the greedy.

(we are to be unattached to the world, to let the corruption around us not touch us)

201 Victory for one sows the seeds of hatred in another, for the loser is unhappy. Be calm and give up both victory and defeat.

(do not desire conquest, nor results. When one stops creating the top, there is no bottom, and if one does not create the bottom, there is no top... this is very vague, and would need a better explication)

211 Cling to nothing, for its loss is pain. Free yourself from attachment to the loved and the hated and you will loose the bonds which tie you.

(this is the essential teaching of Buddhism, in a nutshell. Cling to nothing, end craving. Learn to live and let live... "Let go, and let God..." etc...)

v3 "He beat me, he robbed me. Look at how he abused me and injured me." Live with those thoughts and you will never stop hating.

(this is the root of our world. vengeance. and it's the mindset of Israel, and Christians and Muslims... And me, and all liberationary movements... We focus on the past, pouring wounds on salt. The old phrase: Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, is true as such as it is, but there is a better point, that if one forgets history, one forgets the old grudges. The hatred and the issues have been wiped away. There is no vengeance, for no-one had wronged you in the first place.)

v5 Hatred can never overcome hatred. Only love can bring the end of hating. This is the eternal law.

v305 Sitting and sleeping and living alone within yourself, joyous and energetic, the silent forest will delight you.

(This silent forest is such a beautiful place. I have been there. It is free. I have seen it with my eyes. I also think Silent Forest would be a good song title, if it's not already been taken. It makes me think of Dead Can Dance for some reason)

v405 [the sage] hurts no creature and neither kills nor urges others to kill.
