Psilocybin in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Investigator: Pedro Delgado, MD and Francisco Moreno, MD

This is the first FDA-approved study in more than 25 years to examine the use of psilocybin in a patient population. The principal investigators plan to study the use of psilocybin in 10 patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). They want to determine if they can replicate in a clinical study several published case reports of patients whose OCD symptoms were reduced after self- experimentation with psilocybin mushrooms. The study is close to being initiated. MAPS has paid $12,000 for the synthesis of one gram of psilocybin. Analytical data on this psilocybin has been submitted to FDA in March, 2001, with approval obtained from the FDA on May 9, 2001. DEA licenses received July 2, 2001. Patient recruitment is now underway.

this is rather interesting indeed. i tend to think that most psychocactive drugs would be best used in treating those with severe depression first, and then branched out after much study.

with the more monomanical attributes of ocd, i would think that in some cases the psilocyin would act as a reinforcement for the individuals personalized dillusions, since i think that ocd is primarily a form of fear manifested, and the compulsive activity is a way to deal with, and control the outside world.

or possibly show them the narrowness of this fear and worldview.

should be interesting to see how it unfolds, regardless.

i was just listening to a speech in realaudio tonight from the maps website, and it was all about mdma and acute treatment for severe depression. like if someone is suicidal, to give them mdma, so they aren't suicidal anymore, and then from there, work with them through therapy and use that as a starting point. i like maps.org.:)

it certainly can help, though during severe depression, mdma can actually make it worse. it has for me, anyway.

steal away. i'm a believer in open source. Since I stole it in the first place, who am i to complain? I wanna be like "Umm. I've got OCD.. Can I take some psilocybin?" Heh. OK, I'm not that bad... I wouldn't lie like that.
