8 pm, at Mills Hall - The Whirling Dervishes of Rumi. Founded by the great philosopher and writer Rumi in the 13th century, the ritual known as the sema is performed by the dervishes in a prayer trance. Accompanied by chanting and live music with flutes, string and percussion, the dervishes perform a mesmerizing seven-century old ritual which unites the mind, the heart and the body, gradually reaching rapid, spinning ecstasy.
Saturday, September 18:
7 pm - Karsh Kale, who with his band blends elements of Indian classical music, dub, drum and bass, jungle, reggae, and ambient to create what he calls Urban Raag. With his innovative electric tabla playing and overall musical vision, Kale is creating a new style and sound aesthetic.
