Brent, you may be interested in this:
Nanoloop is a synthesizer / sequencer for the Nintendo Game Boy (TM) . As it is a pure software product and stored on a normal game cartridge, it can be used on any Game Boy and as it provides all necessary functions to produce nice electronic music, no further hardware is needed.
Released in 1999, it was world's first standalone Game Boy music software.

Yes I've seen this and it looks super cool. I actually have the ROMs for it, but there are two problems. One, no emulator can emulate Nanoloop because of its crazy use of the GB sound chip, thus you get no sound with it. Two, trying to load the ROM on my GBA cart that I got doesn't work because you can't load GB Roms onto a GBA cart and have it work, has to be loaded onto a GB rom cart for it to work, which I of course don't have.

There's actually a pretty big chiptune scene that uses this thing quite a bit (and it's brother LittleSoundDJ). 8-Bit Peoples is a good place to check out some of the tunes.
