damn.
the audio portion didn't rip or encode or something.  must look into that.

i know there's issues with needing the audio stream separate from video stream.  and you can encode in different formats.

just need to learn more about it.

the avi video works, however.

a bit blotchy(moderately compressed, so it's expected)...

must look into audio tomorrow.  hope i can just rip the audio and not have to rip the video and re-encode all that.  it seems if it's just an audio stream, i should be able to rip it and attach it to the avi after encoding somehow.

my basic understanding of it is that audio, video, and subtitles, are stored seperately on a dvd. when you rip a dvddepending on the program you can pull out which ever tracks you need or pull out all of them and then select which ones you want to use when you rencode. if you use straight avi you would have to mash them all into one stream for it to work right...one audio, video and sub. If you use a format like mkv or ogg which are containers then those tracks are stored seperately in the container so you can select them on playback. so your video could be a Xvid .avi, and the audio could be three different tracks of mp3, and you could toss in a couple soft subs.

What file size are you going for? I've been mostly copying DVD's as of late, but when I rip them for use on my computer I use MPEG4 at around 2GB file size. Gives the best bang/buck for me.

You should just get a fat Firewire drive. Hook it up to the Mac and share it out or something. Beats having a computer, and it's portable, so you could easily bring stuff over to other's places (like when Tony gets a comp).

Or you could just pay me off. ;)
