i've debated off and on, whether or not an attack would increase or decrease bush's chances. when he was doing well, i believed it would be needless, because 1) he's most likely to be elected, and 2) he could always claim that "we've not suffered a terrorist attack in the US since 9/11, and that means my policies have succeeded"(which is utter bullshit, of course)
now, we see this article, and since he's doing bad in the polls, many of his supporters may rally, and some in the middle(ie: sheep) will jump to his side in the time of crisis. it may just happen yet. i hate to be conspiracy minded. i try to be rational. but it's possible. even if it does happen, i won't necessarily say he did do it, like some on the far end will jump to right away(and of course be summarily dismissed by the other far end who will never even grant such a possibility):

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- U.S. officials say they have credible intelligence information that terrorists are planning an attack within the United States this summer, according to a report late Tuesday by the Associated Press.

"There is a clearly a steady drumbeat of information that they are going to attack and hit us hard," said a senior federal counterterrorism official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The official told the news service that the intelligence does not specify a time, place or method of how the attack would occur.
The government source added that of most concern is that terrorists may have and use chemical, biological or radiological materials that could result in a significant amount of casualties and damage.
The Associated Press said the current intelligence, according to the senior official, is the most disturbing the government has received since the Sept. 11 attacks.
Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Muller are planning a news conference on Wednesday to outline their efforts by law enforcement and homeland security officials to detect and disrupt any potential plots, according to the news report.

Date: 2004-05-26 03:36 am (UTC)I've been seeing this coming for I-don't-remember-how-long. It's moving along right on schedule. Whether or not the story is based on anything in reality, I would be looking for security levels to be raised toward the red end of the spectrum toward the end of summer/beginning of fall, a "brief postponement" of the elections to come sometime in October, and then the announcement of arrests and an "all clear" to be sounded within a few days after what would have been Election Day. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this play included enforcement officials finding some substantial, uber-scary weapon this time around. Drama will be key in this strategy now that ShrubCo has indeed lost its footing in the polls.
