oh shit... this is gonna piss off a LOT of people.
Imam Ali, for those who don't know much about Islam, is the Imam whom Shia are named after. Shia is short for something like "Shia'a Ali" Partisans of Ali.
There was a schism between Muslims over who should lead after Mohammed. The Shia followed Ali. I don't remember his exact relationship to Mohammed. Anyways, this is a sacred site for Shia. Sunni Muslims, the other major sect, chose to follow someone else.(I forgot who)
Ali was a martyr, and the Shia have a holy day for him, about his death in Kerbala. You may have seen Shiites with swords scraping the top of their heads, and bleeding alot.
This is their celebration of Ali's martyrdom.
In other words, many many many shia will be pissed about this. There's a shrine in Kerbala to Ali which is even more sacred.
