Yet another gentoo post.
So things are going quite well here this time around.
I got the nvidia drivers to work, but i'm not keen on how it seems to refresh like 6-8 times before starting x.
In linux, I'm not going to need opengl extensions anyway(what, for a screensaver?), I play games in Windows(games and graphics, and sound, as I've said before, are all the only reasons I use win... sound apps are coming out like mad for linux, so i believe it will change. GIMP sucks, so alas, I will have to continue to use win for graphic work. i could eventually go with transgaming winex, but haven't seen anything about it in a while, and am not sure it will really do what i want. maybe i'll check it out someday.)
anyways, i'm installing qt/kde now(gnome is doing quite well) still have to learn exactly how gdm is setup to login/out, and the best way to get it perfectly configured, but it works well enough for now.
and it's fucking beautiful. much much more pretty than mandrake. the fonts are perfectly anti-aliased, and with this 2.6 kernel, it's FAST! but gnome was already fairly quick. i'll see how kde is. if it's fast I may go back, because it does tend to be prettier/more customizable, but it's way too slow.
also wanna try JuK(that's what I'm technically installing, but of course, I need to install all the libs, which is the kde-base package, so it'll all be installed) I think I may stick with JuK if it has as good a media library tool as it appears. I used XMMS, but frankly it's getting old, and doesn't really have any advanced features. We'll see.
Also need to get Logjam installed for posting to LJ(or I'll like into Kluje, and other linux clients... i don't like how logjam's paragraphing works.
Also, need to get firefox and thunderbird installed. God I love those programs.
I am disappointed that Gnome 2.6 is "hidden" or something like that. I saw that you can force an install, but it sounds like it's not been tested well enough that they're confident people should use it. So i'll wait... But I'm excited to try it out eventually.
I think I should learn emacs. I am efficient at the keyboard, and hell if it works and can allow me to get things done quickly, why not? scoff if you will. i'm not very fond of vi, whether it's Vi or Vim or elVis, or whatever...
Of course, is there really a need for emacs, why not use a regular windowed editor?
also, got my effexor today, and picked up a few mags: CPU, SciAm, and Computer Gaming World(I think that's it) CGW has Tribes 1 and 2(the full versions) on the DVD, and demos for Far-Cry, Painkiller and UT2K4, all supposedly VERY excellent games. I don't know if my geforce is up to snuff.
I don't care to upgrade it just yet.
I think i may go to ATI for my next card, we'll see. My card before this was an ATI RageFury Pro, and before that, the Voodoo Banshee.
I just don't really see a need to spend more than $150 on a graphics card.
Sure, I lust after, something like the Radeon 8500(or is it 9500?) but really, why spend 500 bucks on such a thing.
I wouldn't mind an AMD 64 bit chip eventually.
And a Mac.
And a nice notebook(that actually has a CD-drive!)
umm, ok, yeah.
anyways, i have to admit, I just love gentoo.
i know i liked it before, but i just wasn't patient enough. things seems smoother now, maybe because I've done it before, maybe because I'm taking the time to read the documentation and most of all, and what really makes it worth it.
I am ENJOYING the "hacking" aspect of it. I'm learning more about my hardware, about the linux kernel, about different things. Instead of bitching about how something isn't installing right, I'm now having a good time reading about how to get it to work.
And I like the speed. Pre-emptible kernel is fucking sweEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeet!!!!
I definitely need to work on learning my way around the filesystem and organizing my own stuff properly in my home directory.
Anyways, that's the update.
I think i want to try to get some dishes done before Rosemary gets home, she'll be surprised.

I'm glad you had a nice and productive weekend with the computer, though, hon. You deserve it. :)
