mp3 muthafucka...
So i decided to go with mp3, since my hard drive had to be wiped, and i was debating it anyways, I did a good comparison between mp3 and ogg. i would go with ogg if there was better hardware support. I do like the fact that there's smaller file sizes, and the sound quality in general is better.
I do notice, however, that the oggs seem just a tad muddier than the mp3... Not necessarily in a bad way, they are faithful, but mp3 seems to catch the crispness of the high end, and on my music(ie: autechre, etc...) that might be a good thing.
I did decide to use LAME to encode(well, notlame, which is a precompiled binary for linux)
I went with the --alt-preset extreme option, which gives a 256 kbps or so vbr... I would've gone with insane, which is like 320, but decided that in terms of quality/ratio, it wasn't worth it.
I want to get as much as possible for the size.
I played with the ogg on both bit-rate setting(ie: -b128, -b192, -b256, -b320) and the quality setting(-q4, -q5, -q10) I did 10 quality just to see what sort of bitrate it would do.
500 kbps! WAY more than necessary. I would've gone with -q5 had I chosen ogg.
I'm happy with the MP3 sound quality. If I didn't have as much HD capacity, or either had no concern with hardware support, or knew that ogg would get good hw support soon, i'd go with that.
i've only ripped Minor Threat, EC8OR, and Beatles White Album(disc 1) so far.
Lot's of ripping to do.
I tell ya, though, getting notlame to encode properly wasn't that fun... I finally just looked at the default switches for lame that grip uses, and ported it over to the notlame encoder switches. Lot's of hours of encoding shall ensue... again... i hope my drive doesn't get corrupted again... grrrr...
