Pick an 80s song.

comment and leave the title/artist(if possible), and I'll reply with a memory that it brings up.

I was thinking today of various songs, and realized that the majority of songs I could think of have a memory attached to certain locations/events.

Hope to get some good ones.

Please note that there are probably songs that I *don't* have an association with, so I apologize if I don't have a good answer. I will answer, but it may not be good if there's no association.

Let the questions begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reflex, Duran Duran

Haha... sati posted Falco, i'm surprised you didn't.

now...

Reflex. I remember distinctly being in our Plymouth Champ(sorta like the horizon/omni, but more square), and i was in the back seat. I'm not sure why we were out, but on our way back from wherever we were, my mom had to stop at the school i went to at the time(Christian Haven Academy, remember that brick building that used to be a bank in Maplewood?)... She was involved as a teacher there, so she may have picked some stuff up. While we waited for her, that song was in my head.

I thought of Falco, but alas, that was way too predictable. Then I remembered having a copy of Reflex I taped off the radio and going through it back and forth w/ my walkman, transcribing the lyrics on a piece of paper one night when I was bored. That was my memory, so I figured I'd try to find out what yours was. ;)

I remember one night trying to transcribe "One Night in Bangkok", and I left the papers downstairs overnight. When I woke up, they were mysteriously gone.

I think that song was about transexual prostitutes(I think even back then I kinda knew that)... I'm sure my mom or dad(whoever found it), didn't like the fact I was writing things such as "and if you're lucky it will be a she..."

But I don't think I ever really got the words right anyways.

I wonder how many kids tried to transcribe music... Maybe it's more of a common phenomenon than I thought.

Falco 'Rock Me Amadeus'

Two things come to mind.

It was wintertime, and we were building snow forts out by our shed. I had a whole bunch of snowballs built, and snow built around our picnic table, which provided the frame of the fort. I remember that song being in my head that day.

Second, I'm reminded of the Muppet Babies where Rolf is dressed up in the wig, and they sing the Muppet Babies version of the song. man. that's sad.

I have two....

Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen"

EU, "Da Butt"

hmm, first, i don't know "Da Butt", unfortunately, but it sounds like... well, i probably really wouldn't be into it, I guess, based on the title.

Come On Eileen, of course, I know.

Hmm. Unfortunately that doesn't really bring back a memory. The closest I can get is when I found out that it wasn't The Cure that did it. And that was WAY later than it ever should've been. Like the mid 90's. I think it was when I saw the video, and I was like "Wait! That's not Robert Smith..."

I should've known, since none of the Cure albums I had had it on, but I didn't have their complete discography or anything...

damn. you fucking stumped me.

I picked "Da Butt" because it's probably the 80s song I hated the most at the time it was popular.

OK, try this one: Styx, "Mr. Roboto".

Ah, this one is easy.

I fondly recall the skating rink (starbase 204), and this song. Damn those were fun days. The rink had space-stations(glow in the dark of course) one the wall, along with planets, and video games and pool tables and snacks and popcorn.

I recall one particular night this song was on, and I was singing along with it quite loudly to Aaron(an older kid who went to my school)...

"KILROY! KILROY!"

I also remember drawing that little drawing of the hemispherical head guy with a big nose that pokes over the wall, and with the phrase "Kilroy was here"

something like

Kilroy was here!

so these forms don't like ascii art. should've done the "pre" tag. oh well.

Oh shit, and I remember someone saying that "Domo Arigato was Thank You Very Much..." But when I was that age, I thought that Spanish was the only other language that existed, so I assumed it was Spanish. Ah, little kids...

*sigh* I've never heard it before. Maybe if you could hum a little ditty into a wav file? or I can try to look it up, but since it's not easily recalled, I doubt I have any clear memory associated with it.

We're Not Gonna Take It - Twister Sister

Sitting at the Huber's house, and Rob Huber(Audrey and Larry's nephew) was listening to Twisted Sister. This wasn't during that time, it was like maybe in 6th or 7th grade, so a bit later than when that song was big... I asked him how he could like their music, and he forced me to listen to the music. Unfortunately, i didn't get it then... But now, of course, I know what it's all about...

Yeah, unfortunately, it's a reach, but probably not in the way you consider it. I'm assuming it's a reach, because it was really late 80's??? Or really early? or early 90s or late 70s?

Too bad though, because it's a reach to me, since I don't know the song.

Man you people are picking weird songs.

Pick something that's a little more mainstream. I mean, come on, I was only like 5-12 during that time period. Plus I grew up in BFE and only had access to radio, no MTV for me. And I was lucky I was able to listen to the radio, because my mom, the fundy xian didn't want me to, but i did anyways. muahahahaha!!!!

Sheesh, next you'll be wanting us to post lyrics -- how easy will we eventually need to make it? :)

Okay, hm, 80's that might have gotten radioplay ....

this is so cheese, but 'Eye Of The Tiger' by Survivor? It was from a movie, they must've played it somewhere...

Hey, I already told matt to sing it and make a .wav file, so there.

Eye of the Tiger reminds me of 5th grade and listening Weird Al's "In 3-D" album(I'm pretty certain it was 5th grade), and "Rye or the Kaiser". Specifically I remember walking on the playground near this green power supply thing(some sort of transformer? not the toy, the electrical device), and listening on my friend Brian's headphone to that song. He made me a copy of that tape. I know he loved "Nature trail to hell!" from that album.

Also, I stole Brian's Sideswipe(speaking of transformers). Well, not really steal, just borrowed for a really really really long time.

Ahh, Nature Trail To Hell. Classic stuff.

Rye Or The Kaiser was good, too.

And, I don't even recognize that 88 Lines thing. I'm so ashamed. :)

I'll give you three:

"I Predict" by Sparks
"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell
"(Keep Feeling) Fascination" by The Human League

From: [identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com
good thing you gave three, because the first two, I don't have.

I don't know "I predict", and Tainted Love, I really have no clear memories to relate, but Fascination, I do indeed.

I used to record music off the radio, and this was one song that I did. I loved that trumpet part, and that guy always sounded like Thurston Howell III to me.

On that tape, I also had a microphone recording of me and a friend arguing about the TV and having Sesame Street on in the background... Ernie was saying something along the lines of "Hey Bert... Look at this little fish. Look at it's mouth moving. It's saying 'blooh blooh blooh'" Unfortunately that cut into the fascination, so I never had the full song recorded.
