so, i realized that this may be a bit more powerful than most of you have. sigh. especially the RAM and video-card.

it requires a somewhat more modern system.
I hope at least some of you can pull it off. anyways. if not, wish me luck in finding interesting people out there...

You need 8 things in order to run There. These are listed below from easiest to hardest to understand:

1. Operating system. We support Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (we recommend applying the SP1 upgrade, available for free at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ default.asp), Windows XP. We do not support Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Linux, Unix, OS/2, BeOS, or MacOS. We hope to come out with the MacOS version in 2004. Please sign up for our MacOS mailing list if you're interested.

2. Random Access Memory (RAM) You need to have 256 MB or more. If you meet all the other requirements for running There, but don't have enough RAM, please visit CNET's guide to buying RAM to learn how easy it is to add RAM to you

3. Hard drive space. You need at least 400 MB of free space on your hard drive.

4. Internet software. To ensure a great experience for the largest number of people, we have standardized on three pieces of software that are usually pre-installed on Windows machines:

- Microsoft Internet Explorer v5.0.1 or later. We do not support earlier versions of IE, Netscape, Mozilla, or Opera at this time. Please sign up for our special browsers mailing list, by emailing us at specialbrowsers@there.com. Be sure to include what kind of browser you would like to use.

- Macromedia Flash version 6.0.41 or later. We automatically install Macromedia Flash if you do not already have it. If you would like to upgrade to the latest version (which we recommend) please visit Macromedia's website.

- Microsoft XML version 3.0 Service Pack 2 or later. We detect earlier versions and recommend an upgrade if necessary when you install There. You can update the XML software using Windows Update or by going Microsoft's web site.

5. Internet connection. Since you are reading this page, you probably already have an Internet connection. To visit There:

- You need to connect in one of the following ways, through any ISP (including AOL, MSN, Yahoo/SBC, Comcast, etc): on a 56K modem, any cable modem, any DSL provider, or any ISDN provider. We do not support connections via satellite broadband services due to their high latency.

- If you have a firewall at home that uses Network Address Translation (NAT), it should be compatible with There.

- You can connect to There through a corporate T1 or LAN connection, but your corporate firewall might cause problems because we currently use both UDP and HTTP protocols. If the firewall blocks specific ports, There will work if you make sure that outbound connections on ports 80 (HTTP), 443(SSL) and 2311-2316(UDP and TCP) are allowed through. The firewall needs to allow through all outgoing connections destined to these ports, and all packets coming back in along the same connections. If you cannot arrange for this, we will be "http-encapsulating" everything in several months, so please email us at: connectviafirewall@there.com if you want to connect from behind a firewall, and we'll be in touch when that feature is ready.

6. Central Processing Unit (CPU). To visit There, the CPU in your machine must run at 800 MHz or faster. It must also be a certain brand. There:

- Runs on any Intel Celeron that runs at 800 MHz or faster, any Intel Pentium III that runs at 800 MHz or faster, or any Intel Pentium 4

- Runs on any AMD Athlon that runs at 1.0 GHz or faster, or any AMD Duron that runs at 1.0 GHz or faster

- Does not run on any Intel Pentium, Intel Pentium II, Cyrix, or Macintosh

7. Sound card. Your sound card must be compatible with Direct/X v7. Virtually every sound card manufacturer in the last 5 years meets this specification. The only exception we're aware of is an Aureal sound card, which works but has problems. Please be sure to download the latest software drviers for your sound card to have the best experience. You can usually do that at the web site for your PC (e.g., HP, Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc), or directly from the company that manufactures the sound card.

8. Graphics hardware (also known as video display card). This is the trickiest component to understand, since many cards use brand names that are always changing. In order to understand whether or not your card is supported, it's easiest to find out what kind of graphics chip is on your card (it is usually a chip made by ATI, nVidia, Intel, or S3). Once you know that, you can use the lists below to see if your card is supported.

In general, your card needs to have 3 things: hardware transform and lighting, texture compression, and 32 MB of video memory. Your card will also need the latest software drivers (our installer checks the drivers on your card and tells you if they are out of date. You can still visit There without updating these drivers, but we suggest you update them for the best experience).

ATI will get you There!
Visit There's partner, ATI Technologies for compatible graphics cards that will help you get into the Beta and take your experience in There to the next level, starting at just $79.00. Buy now!

- ATI RADEON 7200, ATI RADEON 7500, ATI RADEON 8500, ATI RADEON 9000, ATI RADEON 9500, ATI RADEON 9700

- ATI RADEON MOBILITY 7500, ATI RADEON MOBILITY 9000

- Any nVidia GeForce with 32 MB of memory or more

- Any nVidia nForce

- Any nVidia Quadro

We do not support the following graphics cards (or cards that contain the following graphics chips):

- ATI RADEON VE, ATI RADEON 7000, ATI RADEON Mobility (with no number; the ones with a number are supported as indicated above), ATI RADEON M6, ATI RAGE

- TNT2, Voodoo, Trident, Kyro, 3D Labs, Matrox, Permedia, SIS

- FireGL

- Riva 128, S3

Some Intel based computers include "on-board" graphics chips (for example, the 810, 815, 830, 845 graphics chips). If you have one of these, and you do not have an additional graphics card, then you cannot visit There. If you have one of these and you do have one of the supported graphics cards (listed above), then you can visit There.

We expect to support a wider set of graphics cards soon. Specifically, we hope to support Intel CPUs with built-in Intel Extreme 3D Graphics (based on the i845 graphics chip), 3dLabs Wildcat VP, and the Matrox Parhelia.

I'm not... I'm not even saying this is really top of the line, but most people don't have 256 megs lying around or even a 32 meg NVIDIA card(which isn't much these days)...

And believe me, I wouldn't have explorer even upgraded on my system if I didn't try to use there.com...

Trust me, I use mozilla. :)

And yeah, I hate the whole "M$" thing as the only OS, but it's understandable, I guess, for now.

I do wish things were more like Pandrax's comment. I did see some virtual worlds that do allow you to run a server on your system.

Poor, poor, poor VRML. I remember when ye were all the rage(funny, though, i've been reading some texts/speeches by Mark Pesce lately, dealing with Terence McKenna and theories of time/virtuality, etc...)

Hmm...no Mac support. :( Chatting would have been cool, I always like doing that with ya.

Could you just set up an IRC channel? Not as cool, but it would allow people congrigate and chat.
