Shit, I may as well go on about it here:
It is that division between what I call science and religion. Scirere, the latin root of science means cut. Religion, by contrast, means bind/unite. So, we have the trend of modern history appear as a struggle between these two forces, and of course, all that entails in politics(the secularization of science and theocracy of fundamentalist religion)
Science, historically, has always been about digging deeper into matter. Splitting the atom is the ultimate achievement of this(well, not literally splitting the atom, we’re on a much deeper level than that now… look at the Large Hadron Collider and Kamiokande, etc…) We took stones and chipped them together to make fire, thus allowing us to melt those “rocks” and forge dense, strong objects. The metals that evolved from that process, the bronze age, the copper, the iron, the steel, and now??? silicon and plastic?
Silicon and plastic, the beauty of technology, and the sad apparent reality that this is our life. This plastic surgery cosmetics that has over-run our life. When you look on TV and see “girls gone wild” don’t you wonder why Islam is seen as revolutionary? Even if, at the same time, it is reactionary. Silicon implants…
Now we are entering the deeper technological level, no longer are we using mere rocks, but biologically designed agents, dead, inert bodies of toxins now injected in the skin, botox. Botox, the fucking disease that killed my grandfather. It’s now injected into the skin of the very preppy people I was forced to despise. Botox, as he lay there, not able to breathe on his own, his body succumbing and wasting away, because he stepped on a rusty nail.
The rich fascist beauty queens take a nice implement, sharpened and designed for cutting ever so efficiently, not puncture like that nail that got him. The take it and gouge it into their bodies, and rip out what they perceive as something that makes them ugly. Nature. They are perverse. They are moving away from what they are given. They are sickened. They take this clean steel blade and instead of getting infected by a rusty steel nail, the get a needle injection to fix that right up.
Will SARS, someday, be just another commodity? Is it already? Was it an underground, secret experiment in bio-tech that was supposed to be a commercial product but slipped out of it’s owners hands?
And what happens? The instruments we are making now with biotech are going to be the cause of our demise. The vision of the atomic cloud was too shocking. We needed that. But unfortunately, the fear of terrorism doesn’t stop the trend of militarism and biotechnology.
This sickening war of history. Capitalism will eventually burn itself out. My fear is that it will take humanity with it. But on my (not so?) “good” days, I tend to think this isn’t such a bad idea. The nuclear bomb was radiation therapy by god, but it never got a chance to work. And in theory this should be because it scared us the fuck away from it. But it didn’t. We just consumed and produced more. And we ever refine the tools that both heal and will eventually be used to destroy. and also, the tools that were destructive now seen as evil.
What happens when al-Qaeda, sickened by the botox injections, takes that very same strain of disease and modifies it with our own technologies, and destroys our civilization with it?
This is what they see, and the west does not understand. Fundamentalist islam sees the west as a sickness, a disease, a cancer that must be eradicated, in the same sense that many extreme environmentalists see humanity is a curse that must be eradicated.
That void of nihilism ever so extant, creeping around every corner, that’s what modern society is. It’s that imagery of the art in the first world war. The bleak apocalyptic imagery.
We are in the process of being burned by fire, radiated by the hand of god, will we be destroyed or will we learn?
