muahahaha!!!!!!!!

I've been having real hell trying to get my music database configured on my linux box. It uses PHP and MySQL... I've been fucking around for days trying to figure it out, and figured it must be something in the way that my PHP script was reading the GET/POST results. I could do a normal query, when I manually entered in the genre of music, (ie: select * from cdlist where Genre='IDM') but when trying to pass a variable under the name $genre_name?IDM, the script wouldn't take it(I had "select * from cdlist where genre='$genre_name'"(this is bare basics, not the actual code, obviously)...

I did some searches on MySQL and PHP queries, and found something relating to GET/POST, and found that "register_variables" as a configuration option used to be set to "on" which loaded all variables(including user-defined) into the global namespace. But this led to security flaws, so now it's turned off, as of v4.2 and up. But I found a way to get it to retrieve the info. Merely designate the variable $genre_name=$_GET['genre_name'], and that solves it! Then you can query $genre_name like a normal variable, but it's using the $_GET global variable instead.

Anyways, it's something like that.

And if this made any sense to you... Well at least it wasn't merely wasted typing space.

And if it didn't. Move along now!(if you haven't already)

And also:

I GOT THE NEW AUTECHRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a happy happy happy boy.

Now all i gotta get is fucking Anti-EP, and CichliSuite.(I think that's all of them... well, I actually burned some of the others(ie: ep7, lp5 and TriRep++... so I have to buy those eventually, cuz I fullheartedly will always no matter what buy an autechre disc. )

The funny thing is, when I listen to Tony and my music, I think we sound hella like them. I mean, most of the other IDM artists are pretty good, I like them and all, but they all seem, to me at least, to derive from either a minimalist/glitch techno or the drill-n-bass(which seems to be the most common). Autechre and Boards are really, it seems to me, the most unique in the cluttered field. And I think Tony and I really have that Autechre sound. Not to say we're anywhere near them, but I dunno how to describe it.

Anyways, all I can say is I <3 Autechre...

Well, the first two discs(Incunabula, Amber) are probably the most listener friendly. And probably the most like Boards. Amber is sort of a darker version of Boards, I'd venture to say, and Incunabula is sort of like early-proto-ambient dance.

The two Peel Session discs are pretty good as well.

LP5 is great, but maybe a little more difficult to digest. Not to hard, though.

Also the TriRepetae++(released stateside) is a double disc set, with The Anvil Vapre EP, and the Tri-Repetae EP... Both those EP's are good(I believe there's a third EP that's smooshed onto their as well, but can't quite remember which one it is) A lot of people swear by this one as their favorite(the ++ version)

Chiastic slide is probably fairly listenable, just the first track irritates me a little... But once it gets into the album it's great.

Save Confield for last. It's the densest, most difficult to appreciate album of Autechre's. That does not mean it's bad, but just so thick with so much happening, and very slow compared to most of their other stuff.

If you'd like to see some of their videos, along with hearing the newer stuff, the Gantz Graf EP/DVD combo is great. It has a new video(which kicks ass), and a "remix" video for shit... One of the tracks off of TriRep, can't remember which one.

Anyways, Yeah... Go for Amber and Incunabula first, my favorites are probably Amber and LP5. Actually, I highly recommend LP5, but that's probably to enjoy after your intro with the first two.

Factoid: The greek word for Amber just happens to be ELEKTRON! Static electricity was given by rubbing wool over Amber, so they got the name for electricity from Amber! Old school low tech fossilizing stuff and new school high tech digitizing stuff all in one! I think that's the key to autechre. As Sean said in an interview(Sean Booth and Rob Brown are autechre):

"It's like totally natural and synthetic at the same time"(with *thick* Manchesterian accent, too!) :)

Good luck, and enjoy your new find.

BTW, you were right: Boards of Canada.
