Polysomnogram tonight in a couple hours... yikes! I get to sleep with electrodes hooked up to me... GAH!!! (Ol' Fisherman's Sticky Pads... They got 2 uses!) ;P
Second, just had a kickass idea. I've heard of a couple similar things, but maybe not quite like I'm thinking. First I was thinking about how much I pay for internet. 60 bucks for cable internet. That's just too much, so I thought of how I can reduce it, and I can either drop level of service, or go to DSL. At this point, I'm thinking of going to DSL.
Then I began to wonder why there isn't any sort of community DSL type thing... I know there are some community ISP's that are dial-up, but none in my area that I'm aware of. But I want broadband. Ideally.
Then I began to think: Why isn't there a really kick-ass community ISP in madison? We have WORT(Community Radio), WYOU(Great Local Cable Access), Pirate Radio, and IndyMedia Center, Activists galore. Why not?
What would it take to start up something like this? I'm not ready for anything like this yet, but I can see something down the road. Maybe this could be my life's calling?
We would use Linux as the OS, and encourage open-source as much as possible, as well as encryption and privacy. Web Hosting for local/community organizations and sponsorships... Pledge drives??? It should be cheap and easily available.
I'd assume you can get DSL or some other broadband service going, but you have to pay a premium to a main access point... How would one become a main access point? Also, would it be best to incorporate as a non-profit? And how would organizational structure be implemented? A co-op model? Volunteers? There are so many different ways to set up. There's a lot of work involved, but I'm sure there's more than enough people who would love working on something like this. The community would love to support it, I think. We have the Linux Users Group, and they may be willing to work on the project...
This is something I'd like to see take off, but I know there's a lot of planning involved, and I don't know where to start... Do I try to take networking classes? That may be a start. I know I'm not gonna get rich by making music or writing, but maybe I can do something that'll make a difference in my community... I don't wanna be rich, just make a living... But I wanna make a living that means something, and if I can't write or make music, then maybe this is the best impact I can have on the world...
Kara, what would Ray say to something like this? Ziggurat, you think this is a good idea? And all my other local geek friends(ie: Shayla, and the rest of the crew)...
Later folks...
