Well, it looks like I may have jumped into the trial at the right time. Issue 12 (what they call their patches) came out last night (I think it was last night).
bradhicks posted about this patch and says things have massively changed since NCSoft (publisher) bought the game from Cryptic (the dev). They didn't used to listen to the community, to the detriment of the game. They still keep balance, apparently, and aren't giving in to whiners, but apparently the old lead (Jack Emmert) had a "vision" and any suggested changes that didn't fit that vision, even if it enhanced the game and didn't break balance, were abandoned, even though players clamored for it.
Anyways, we'll see. I'm not far enough into it to really get the whole structure. I don't have any manual to read that can help me learn the basics. I did the tutorial which helped, of course. But the deeper mechanics (or hell, even the surface mechanics) are still a bit fuzzy to me.
Last night I made a character called "Eshter Apio" (ES Therapio -- electro shock therapy). Her background is as an ES specialist who got tired of seeing repeat offenders and not being "cured", so she decided to take it upon herself to proceed with a more "permanent" solution.
One interesting thing I saw is that they plan on making a "quest creator" where you can take zones and villains and create dialog and storylines to have people play through. Sounds interesting.
