Let's just say, for a second, that you purchased a brand spanking new motherboard, and a 1.6 ghz processor. This processor is an AMD athlon, which rates itself in a comparable spec to an intel speed(ie: 1900+) so in theory, this should run with similar performance as a 1.9 ghz intel chilp. You download a speed check utility to see how the system is running, and you see it come up at 1591 Mhz. OK, you think to yourself that this is short of the 1900 you need. You've looked at the BIOS settings before, and you do a few calculations and figure that ultimately you need to set the clock at 1500, with a ratio of 133 instead of the clock autodetect it's at.(which would be 1200 mhz)
You do this, and exit the bios, and the computer shuts down. Oh shit you think to yourself. You think over what you just did. You realize that you set that actual speed to 1900... You overclocked the bastard 300 mhz. without any proper cooling. Oh shit you think to yourself. I just blew 93 bucks.
Oh shit. But you're not crying. You're still numb to the fact of what just happened. You try to boot again, but it still doesn't boot. You ask yourself "If I get a new chip, how the hell will it boot to bios (since it's software settings, not hardware jumpers) to change it to the proper settings?" The thought occurs: CMOS reset jumper!
You pull out your handy motherboard manual, and look it up. You reset the jumper, and sure as shit! The fucker works. You are still a little paranoid, because you pulled the chip and heatsink and fan out of the socket, and thus the thermal paste that came with the processor/heatsink combo, is now not put on correctly. But you think that the system was running fairly cool, and you look at the temperature in the bios, and it looks fine. So you're fairly certain it'll be ok. If not, that's the way the chip falls. Maybe you should buy some thermal paste.
You big fucking retard.
And next time think before you change your clock speed. Dumbass.
