The magnitude 9.0 quake struck about 7 a.m. Sunday (0000 GMT Saturday) and was centered about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

Sumatra/Java, this gets me thinking about something else... Some of you may know, and some may not, but this is the abode of Orangutans, and also, their populations are dwindling rapidly and are fairly close to extinction.

I am now worried about the effect of these waves upon their population. My guess would be that they're further inland and since they live in the trees and not on houses on the ground, they are safer than humans living in coastal regions, but I've really no clue about the depth of the damage.

I am just sending good thoughts and energy towards not just the people(and they have my deepest sympathies, and I plan on donating towards the relief effort), but also to those relatives of ours who are struggling to survive due to man's folly.

peace to all gaia's children tonight.

Wonderful post, Dave. And I agree. Not just the people, and the orangutans, but all that lives in those areas.

With 55,000 humans dead already, and officials expecting the toll to "rise even more steeply", I couldn't agree with you more. There's also an article out there about how geophysicists are saying the quake was large enough to wobble the earth in it's orbit, and move some of those islands up to 20 meters (60+ feet).
