One of the fundamental flaws, I think, in the American psyche, is that of equating capitalism with freedom. And that, if you break down trade barriers to corrupt regimes, break sanctions, and make a profit for yourself, well a nice little side effect is the democratization of the country.

I don't know if that's really true. Look at China. How many people believe that China doing more trade with the US is actually going to somehow magically bring democracy to China? There may be a tiny move towards it, but there will always be some system of control.

I've tried to figure out why, exactly, Falun Gong/Falun Dafa is considered anathema to the Chinese state. I don't understand what exactly is so threatening. Is it due to the fact that some guy was able to amass a large group of people to follow his teachings, and the authorities were worried that he may use this group to attempt a takeover? I don't know any other way that it could be explained.

Yes, and I agree 100% with it. I have a few gay friends, and one thing that really bothers me is "civil union"... Rosemary(sophy) points out that civil unions are similar in concept to "separate but equal", and that's bullshit, and it's a pussy way out of dealing with the problem.

I don't know how to react or to talk to these right-wingers... Rosemary and I argued last night, and she reminded me how confrontational I can be, even when I'm trying to be diplomatic. I have to re-read the details to comment more in full, and I'll do that tonight after work...
