So, I'm compiling gentoo right now, so i can get the 2.6.5 kernel(with the gentoo enhancements), and gnome 2.6, and I suppose kde 3.2 I should try as well.

I forgot at which stage I'm on now... I'm compiling the nvidia-kernel driver, and then i have to do the emu10k1(which is for my soundcard), in theory that should work fine.

I was stupid and didn't check what deps the nvidia is requiring, I know there's 18. Luckily, since there's a server at the UW, I can easily hit my 2.5 Mbps dl time... Compiling of course, is the biggest question.

abadman, I am a bit lost on the whole udev issue. i know that devfs is deprecated, and in the documentation they said to use the "/dev" option in make menuconfig(or some option like that), which was supposedly experimental, but the dev that I saw was the devfs, not udev. I looked through all the menus. I'm afraid now that somehow udev isn't gonna be in the kernel. well, i'll see once everything else is compiled and setup, and if my hardware doesn't work, i'll hazard a guess as to the cause.

so far it's going smooth, but this is all the easy part. i think i chose all the good options for my kernel, stupidly i didn't load them as modules. oh well. i'm not too concerned, if worse comes to worse I'll just recompile the kernel. at least that doesn't take too long.

i'm sure you'll all be prepared for some mega-bitching in the coming days, but i'm gonna try to be good about it, and i look forward to the challenge and chance to learn more.

udev is like devfs sorta. Anyway, you want them both even though udev is slated to replace devfs. I think udev is in by default, and devfs is an option.
