The Mayan long count calendar is a list of days in the Fourth Sun, the current cycle of the world. The calendar simply ends on Dec. 21, 2012 (the winter solstice), and the Mayans did not offer a calendar addendum to specify anything much happening after that.
A variety of modern intepreters have taken this to mean that this is pretty much the end point of time, but since the Mayan language is still largely incomprehensible to scholars, the details of the whole thing are kind of obscure. One could argue that the Mayans just figured they had enough time to get around to doing the next 5,000 year cycle, but then bear in mind you're dealing with a mentality that felt it was reasonably urgent to chart out the first 5,000 years in hourly increments. Procrastination doesn't seem to be one of their big problems.

Date: 2003-07-18 01:12 pm (UTC)What I found funny was the last bit about them having 5,000 years to count hours towards the final date...
On the Terence thing, though, I think it's important to note(I'm not a firm believer in eschatology as it is... I think if anything, 2012 is a bit early. 2030-2060 is more likely, based upon other accounts I've read, but who knows, it could all just continue as normal...)
Actually, though, Terence has stated that you can really put any date on the graph. It just happened that 2012 lined up fairly well. Since it's all fractal resonances, I'm sure that a later date would suffice, he probably could've chosen an earlier date, depending on how things fit into the pattern.
The other problem I've noted with it is that at some points he states something happened at a low point of novelty, but to me, it seems like it was a novel thing.
It's such a loose, vague notion(and one reason the scientists would laugh, cuz that's their arguments about prophecies... "they're all so vague, anyone can apply it to their life" in the same way astrology is vague), that what, exactly, is novelty? I mean we have an idea, but really how do you quantify it?
I think that 9-11 is novel, but I found a site somewhere(I should've bookmarked it... sigh) that showed the attacks were actually at the peak(thus "not novel"...) But maybe I have to find the site again and verify that's what I saw.
Squarepusher/Luke Vibert!!!!!!!! woot! Are they hitting your area at all? I'll post about the show tonight.

2012...
Date: 2003-07-18 05:56 pm (UTC)Right now I'm finding it difficult to know what to focus on. As a teacher I have to work out what it is I am preparing my children for. All I know is it's going to be nothing like anyone at the Ministry of Education has been predicting. I want to get out and go about educating myself. Not very much time is left...
